Dropping by the First Turn in Tanglewood Shopping Center, 6926 N. University St., may be the closest thing to a pit stop for NASCAR fans in Peoria.
NASCAR merchandise is big business, totaling more than $1 billion in annual U.S. sales, according to NASCAR Illustrated. As many as 110 souvenir trailers set up shop at major races across the country, dispensing everything from window decals to embroidered leather jackets.
David Quinn, 37, a Henry native and a lifelong racing fan, opened his store three months ago for racing fans who can't always make it to the racetrack.
"I wanted to have a store for people like myself. I planned this for three years, arranging financing and figuring out merchandising," he said.
Quinn, who still works part-time at Holmes Shoes in the Metro Centre, said he's worked in retail all his life. But now he's retailing his passion.
